Daily wins national SPJ Mark of Excellence award, named finalist for two others

The Daily learned student staffers won one category and were finalists in two others in the Society of Professional Journalists’ national Mark of Excellence contest in results announced Thursday.

Paxson Haws won first place for best use of multimedia for her project SAE: Five years later.

The staff was a finalist in online news reporting for a series of stories written during the BERT sit-in. And Will Conover was a finalist for online/digital sports videography for his project in which gymnast Maggie Nichols’ breaks down her routines. 

National winners were chosen from category winners in each of SPJ’s 12 regions and were judged by journalism professionals with at least three years of experience. Those national honorees will be recognized at SPJ’s annual national conference, held Sept. 2-4 in New Orleans and online.

The Daily competes in SPJ’s Region 8, which comprises Oklahoma and Texas. This year it had nine placements in the region, including seven first-place honors. This marks the second consecutive year The Daily has won a national MOE category, following on top honors in sports reporting last year.
