Jordan Miller placed 1st in the nation in the Hearst Awards’ breaking news category for her story on a Gaylord College professor using a racial slur during class in comparison to the phrase “OK, boomer.”
This appears to mark the first time, per available Daily and Gaylord records, an OU student has placed first in any Hearst category.
Additionally, Nick Hazelrigg placed sixth in the same category for his story on the first night of the sit-in at Evans Hall.
These mark our sixth and seventh placements of the 2019-20 Hearst cycle. Last year, staffers from The Daily placed in five Hearst categories. Since 2014-15, The Daily now has placed 15 times in the contest.
