Daily reporter places in Hearst Awards competition for feature writing

George Stoia

George Stoia placed ninth in the nation Monday in the Hearst Awards’ feature writing category for a story written last Christmas about how football families celebrate the holidays on the road during bowl season.

The contest names the top 20 college feature writers in the nation.

This marks The Daily’s second placement of the 2020-21 Hearst cycle, which staggers its category deadlines throughout the academic year. It also follows Stoia placing in three Hearst categories – sports writing, personality profile and finishing third in the national championships – during the 2019-20 Hearst cycle. Stoia graduated in May and now covers the Denver Broncos for the Colorado Springs Gazette and Denver Gazette.

Last year, staffers from The Daily placed nine times in various Hearst categories. Since 2014-15, The Daily now has placed 19 times in the contest, which honors the best in collegiate journalism.
