You know the real-world value that working in OU Student Media provides. Interaction from alums like you is no small part of that.
“I’ve met some of the most talented reporters, editors and news correspondents in the world, and it’s hard to believe they were once doing what I’m doing,” says current staffer Lauren Parajon, who has both written for The Daily and served as an editor in the Sooner area.
“When I hear them talk about the people they’ve met and the stories they’ve covered, it’s mindblowing to think to know that that’s going to be me someday.”
Whether you have an hour or an afternoon to spare, your time is our most valuable resource to our student staffs.
Our alumni regularly
• speak to classes and staffs
• judge contests
• serve as mentors
• critique projects
• offer advice
• hold interviews
• and more.
Design and PR consultant Tiffany Wilken (Daily editor, spring 1995) says it’s been important to her to give back to the department that taught her so much. “Having professional advice when I was a student was invaluable,” Wilken says.
“We immediately took what we learned from those guests and applied it to the work we were doing.”
Wilken, who has recently judged a portfolio competition, held design sessions and conducted mock interviews, says she benefits from her current interactions, as well.
“It’s rewarding to get a glimpse of the great things OU journalism students are doing these days,” Wilken said. “I’m not only a connection for these students; they’re a connection for me for future hires, recommendations and more.”
