Daily staffers win Heartland Student Achievement Award for sports student production

The Daily won its first Heartland Student Achievement Award for sports student production on Saturday night in a ceremony streamed online.

The honor was part of the student categories of the 34th annual Heartland Regional Emmy Awards presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Students involved in the piece, Out of Bounds: Pregaming, included Will Conover, who served as producer/editor, Christian Anderson, who served as director, and Xavier Turner and Janae Reeves, who were on-camera talent. The piece was one of three episodes of The Daily’s magazine style sports show produced throughout the 2019 football season.

It is the most-ambitious effort produced and highest honor earned so far by our video desk, which continues to break new ground for what’s possible in our multimedia-driven independent student news organization.

The piece was one of 428 nominees recognized from 1,155 entries in 2020 submitted from news outlets in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.
