Two OU Daily students were named finalists in the Hearst Journalism Awards contest Tuesday for writing some of the nation’s best collegiate profiles in 2017.

Joe Buettner’s revealing profile of OU quarterback Baker Mayfield ahead of his winning the Heisman Trophy in December was judged the nation’s ninth best profile. Jesse Pound’s insightful profile of OU Provost Kyle Harper that ran in April was judged the 14th best.

Nationally, 20 students were honored in the category. OU, along with Indiana, Penn State and Syracuse, were the only programs with two finalists.

Buettner, a December 2017 graduate, now writes for DieHards.com. Pound, a May 2018 graduate, begins a graduate program at Villanova this summer.

The 58th-annual Hearst Awards, according to its website, includes five writing, one radio, two television, and two photojournalism competitions offering up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. Entries are drawn from 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs.
